Currently AAFAME is working with American YouthWorks who is a comprehensive human investment organization that transforms young people into self-sufficient adults through education, job training and community service. 

BOMA AUSTIN & AAFAME TEAM UP FOR JOINT COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT - Members from both AAFAME and BOMA's community service committees recently met with Richard Halpin, Founder of AYW, and Ted Roan, AYW Project Manager to discuss ongoing community service efforts at the Charter School.

AYW is a nonprofit Green Jobs Training and Education Center located in Austin. AYW operates a comprehensive program providing education, jobs training, and social services to transform the lives of youth and adults. AYW creates a holistic opportunity for individuals to acquire the life skills needed to succeed in the new, green economy.

BOMA and AAFAME's focus is to mentor students from AYW, coordinate building tours for students to introduce them to entry level opportunities available to them upon graduation, and provide them classroom instruction from BOMA International's: Foundations of Real Estate Management curriculum. Foundations is a soup-to-nuts, 5-module, 28-hour entry-level course, covering the fundamentals of commercial real estate administration, management, building systems, accounting and reporting, contract management, and more. Students will receive a BOMA International certificate upon completing the course.

If you have an internship opportunity for American Youthworks students to work part time to develop skills used in the workforce, contact James Delgado for placement services. Jobs should be in the building maintenance field such as vendors or engineers who need assistants and will compliment the Casa Verde learning experience.

An Austin-based safe haven for abused and neglected children received acomplete energy home make-over by AAFAME & BOMA members.  Angelheart Children’s Shelter has been battling electric bills nearly equal to their mortgage payment each month.  However, with the help of AAFAME and BOMA Austin, they received a home energy make-over on Saturday, November 1st.

This worthwhile endeavor allowed both groups an opportunity  to make a real difference in people’s lives in a very concrete way, saving the organization money and making this home more affordable and comfortable.  By improving the home’s energy efficiency, we estimate it will save this organization as much as 25 percent a year, which could equate to about three months of energy use annually in operating cost, allowing Angelheart to use this money in other crucial areas.

An energy audit was performed on the 1970’s ranch-style home by industry professionals. Based upon the findings, volunteers and others will donate not only their time but also materials, including: a new high-efficiency air-conditioning unit, new energy efficient washer/dryer set, new doors and windows and incandescent light bulbs with new compact fluorescent lights.  A few of the tasks being performed on the shelter are: weather-stripping around the exterior doors, insulating outdoor power outlets and sealing windows with protective foam or caulk.

"Each month when we receive our electric bill for Angelheart, it’s a shock to the system," said Sheila Falco, director, Angelheart Shelter. "These improvements will have a huge impact on this organization and,  more importantly, make this shelter feel more like a home for the 300 Central Texas children we help each year.”

There is nothing like the feeling of accomplishment, well yes there is actually…It comes when you know that your accomplishment will affect the lives of children that really need help.

On May 31st, 2008, the Austin Association of Facility and Maintenance Engineers raised over $7,000 during their 2nd Annual Adventure Quest Adventure Race. The purpose of the race was to raise money for an Energy Makeover for the Angelheart Children’s Shelter located in Austin. Angelheart is a non-profit organization responsible for providing shelter and establishing foster care for children from newborn to 18 years of age that have been removed from their homes due to abuse and/or severe neglect. 

The Energy Makeover being conducted by the Engineers and Vendors of AAFAME is a gift that keeps on giving. Volunteers have not only been able to reduce the cost of energy to the shelter from Austin Energy, but they have found ways to help the shelter use less energy over the coming years, for example; window treatments, energy efficient HVAC units, and lighting treatments with highly efficient bulbs. All of these efforts combined will result in ten’s of thousands of dollars saved over the coming years. That is money that can go back to the shelter to help the children have a better quality of.

The 2 man teams that participated in the race were from all walks of life including professional athletes to mothers/daughter teams. All of the sponsors, teams and volunteers are the reason AAFAME was able to make this a successful event.

The Austin Association of Facility & Maintenance Engineers, otherwise known as AAFAME, has choosen Angelheart Children's Shelter as their "Charity of Choice" for the second year in a row.  Last year, AAFAME completed an Extreme Makeover of the shelter.  This year, they coordinated an Amazing Race on Saturday, September 29th.  Approximately thirty teams raced through downtown Austin, competing in various checkpoint challenges and solving mystery clues, all to help raise money for Angelheart.  Challenges included riding a tricycle through an obstacle course, hula hooping, putting together puzzles, and eating tons of marshmallows. Thanks to the many sponsors, donations, volunteers and race participants, AAFAME was able to donate over $7,000 to Angelheart. Click here to read Austin American Statesman news article (1-08)

For 4 years in a row AAFAME has conducted a Toy Drive for Brown Santa at our Annual Holiday Luncheon.  Each year we collect more and more!  Thanks for all those who contribute each and every year - it makes a difference.

Extreme Makeover project for Angelheart Children Shelter held on October 14th, 2006 by AAFAME & BOMA Austin.  Over 50 volunteers helped with the all day project that included restoring bedrooms, garages, patio covers, and new furniture.  Click here from coverage by News 8 Austin and Pflugerville Pflag. 

AAFAME has chosen Angelheart Children's Shelter as their sole beneficiary for ongoing community projects effective June 2007.

AAFAME has conducted a Fan Drive for the Family Elder Care in 2005, 2006 & 2007.  We have raised over $6,500 in donations in the last 3 years.  Donations were from members of our organization - special thanks to all that contributed.

We also conducted a year long Food Drive in 2004 which netted over 1,600 lbs of food for the Capital Area Food Bank.

 

Handy Wheels joint project held with BOMA Austin in June 2004.  We Completely refurbished an elderly gentlemen in wheelchair's home from inside and out from top to bottom.  All day project.
